A display case has been placed in the MSB lobby that now houses a gift of samurai armor from the city of Nagano, Japan in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Sister Cities relationship between Nagano and Clearwater. The armor is a replica of that worn by Sanada Yukimura during the Warring States Era in the late 16th and early 17th century. Red suits of armor are known as “aka-zonae”, and wearing such a conspicuous color on the battlefield conveyed the soldier’s preparedness to fight with dignity and honor.

In giving the city of Clearwater this honored gift, Shoichi Washizawa, Mayor of Nagano stated “In presenting this suit of armor, it is my sincere hope that the people of Clearwater will develop a deeper affinity for the culture, art, and history of Japan, and that the friendship of our two cities will continue for eternity.”

For questions related to the armor or the Sister Cities program, please contact the Cultural Affairs Division at 562-4837.

Sculptors Bloom through St. Petersburg College Program
St. Petersburg College currently offers a two-year ceramics program headed by faculty artists Jonathan Barnes and Kim Kirchman.  They foster a sense of community in the classroom that prompts many students to continue their studies in the studio well beyond the degree program.  Synergy is also created from the mix of students ages 18 to 70 as they share fresh ideas and wisdom in the multi-generational environment.

The City of Clearwater Cultural Affairs division is pleased to showcase the works of faculty and student artists at the Clearwater Main Library this winter.  Rotating exhibits of three-dimensional works created at the St. Pete College Clearwater Campus studios will be on display in the library's Osceola Gallery.
